What kind of PC do you need for VR gaming?

For VR gaming, you need a powerful CPU which can keep track of placement and interactions in the virtual world, as well as processing any inputs from your headset or controllers. The CPU will also help process frames faster in VR, so for the best experience, you need something fairly robust.

For the smoothest frame rates and fastest responsiveness, you’re going to want to pair that CPU with a fast and powerful graphics card. Unlike traditional gaming on a single monitor, when it comes to a VR headset, your GPU is having to work twice as hard, rendering a high-resolution image for both eyes. You need a graphics card that can handle this increased workload.

Lastly, your RAM is going to act as the powerful connector between your CPU and GPU. Fast RAM, and enough of it, will help speed up load times, and rendering times, as well as smoothing out lag and stuttering that can ruin your immersion.

What Graphics Card do I need for VR?

This really depends on the hardware and software that you’re going to use, but there are a few things to consider. Firstly, you need to make sure that your GPU is compatible with your VR headset (which you can do with the SteamVR Performance Test tool). You should also be looking for the most VRAM possible, to ensure your GPU can effectively render images. It’s important as well to consider a GPU that can deal with the latest VR software at high frame rates, as this will help you avoid the motion sickness that can come from low frame rates and lag.

How much RAM do I need for VR?

The received wisdom used to be 8GB of RAM as a bare minimum, but as software and new games have started to increase requirements, we typically recommend a minimum of 32GB of RAM (and at least double that if you’re developing VR applications). This is sufficient to provide a fast, smooth experience and is usually more than enough for standard gaming too.

Does VR use more CPU or GPU?

There’s no doubt that VR is intensive and asks a lot of your system. Due to the need to render high resolution displays for both eyes and render 3D environments, we can’t deny that the GPU is important for your system. If you really want to get the best out of your system though, you need a CPU and GPU that work well together and allow each other to perform at their best.  It’s best to balance your components well, so don’t spend all of your budget on a great GPU, only to get a CPU that struggles to process the elements of your game.

What peripherals do I need for virtual reality?

Beyond your gaming PC, if you’re looking to get started with virtual reality gaming, you are also going to need a VR headset so you can see the simulated world, controllers so you can interact with that world, and potentially motion tracking sensors (although check your specific headset as some come with the motion tracking sensors built in).
